3.) Insert Custom Toe Plugs > Buying skates for kids is
usually brutal. Then again, there's nothing "usual" about
MLX skates. We'll show you how MLX is stretching the
seasons out of your kids' skates.
2) Fit Skates > Got your hot, fresh-from-the-oven
skates? Time to slip those puppies on and get to fittin'
with a game we like to call "Dave Says."
1) Heat Skates > Dave Cruikshank and Dustin Byfuglien
walk into a kitchen...It's not a bad joke, it's how you
heat mold your MLX skates at home.
4.) Make Minor Adjustments > Hockey players are
particular about their skates. Thankfully, so are speed
skaters.
Congratulations on the purchase of your MLX Ice Hockey Skates. You are one of the
lucky few that owns a pair of these rare, hand-made skates that are improving the
way hockey players skate. The videos below were created to help you Get Set Up
which means adjusting your MLX skates so that they perform at their optimal level.
FAQ's
Why are these skates harder to get on and off?
Because they are more contoured and more moldable than
traditional hockey skates. MLX’s molding locks your foot into
a better skating position, with the boot wrapped around your
foot snugly. Potentially, it takes more time/effort to put on and
take off. When you look at MLX skates you should not see
“clean” lines. You should see lots of curves and areas that
look like they have been customized for your foot.
What if I lose a bolt on some part of my skate?
We have included 6 extra bolts, t-nuts, and washers as
replacements with your new skates. Use your
T20 driver that came with your skates and just tighten in
another bolt. If this continues to be a problem please apply
a little loctite.
Will they stretch? They feel tight when I first put them on
Yes, they will stretch out if you have a full foot. The skates
get more comfortable once they have been heated and worn
a few times.
Will my skates get tighter, they feel loose out of the box?
Yes, after heating, your skates will more snug, but making
skates more narrow is a little more difficult than making
them wider.
Can I ruin my skates by overheating?
Yes you can. Please be careful not to heat more than 180
degrees Fahrenheit for more than 20min. If you’re heating
your skates with a heat gun, watch for the “wet look,” (leather
will look shinny) which indicates the temperature is too high.
ALSO, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR SKATES IN A HOT CAR
Is it safe to mold my new skates with my oven?
Yes your conventional oven is safe as long as you preheat it
to the recommended 200 Degrees Fahrenheit before putting
your skates in. It also is recommended to check the
temperature of your oven with a cooking thermometer if
possible to make sure your oven is the correct temp.
What should I place my skates on in the oven?
Please place your skates in the middle of the oven (not too
high or not too low; OR too far back or too far forward to
touch the edges)
What if my oven is a convection oven do I still use the
same heat molding protocol?
If you have a convection oven we recommend checking your
skates after 4-8-10 minutes and then again at 12min to see
if the skates are soft. Convection ovens will heat your skates
faster than a conventional oven.
Should my insole and laces be in the skate when I heat
them?
Your insoles should be removed when heating.
Do I need to tighten my blade holder bolts when I first get
my skates?
A good rule of thumb is to get in a habit of always checking
your hardward on the skates to make sure it is tight. The
bolts do not need to be over tightened risking stripping.
Also, the blade holder bolts need to be tightened after heat
molding.
The MLX Skates will feel different from any skate you have ever worn. Do not expect miracles the first time you step on
the ice. After getting properly set-up, and learning to skate the right way, the skates will perform better and better each
time you step on the ice. Once this happens, you will never go back to traditional hockey skates.
Quick story…when this technology entered the speedskating world, I struggled to get used to the skates. In fact, during
my first National Championships with the new skates, I switched back and forth between my new and old skates, as I
could not make the adjustment. Once I figured out the proper settings for the way I skated, and adjusted my technique
accordingly, the skates performed as expected, and I never looked back.
You may or may not have this experience, but trust yourself, and the skates, and you will be amazed at how you will be
able to perform wearing the MLX Skates.
6.) Lace Up the Skates > Our skates can’t do all the
work for you. As Curtis Brackenbury explains, you gotta
lace ‘em right for ultimate performance.
5.) Adjust the Blade Offset > Customizable.
Replaceable. MLX blades allow you to perfect your
stride with customizable blade positioning, or to replace
the blades after some wear and tear, if you’re Tomas
Holmstrom.

How do we order the correct fitting skate?
Get someone to help you measure your foot and then take that
measurement and compare it to the sizing chart online. If you
like a tight fitting skates - like with your foot barely hitting the end
of the skate - buy the size smaller or the size that your
measurement is at the upper limit. For example, if I like my skate
to fit tight and I'm 28.1 cm then I would order size 9. if I like bigger
fitting skates I would go with size 10 and the custom fit inserts.
Remember there is not that much difference between sizes.
How do we know where the blade goes?
The blades should be tightened past snug. Avoid tightening the
bolts if the plastic is hot,; like after molding the skates for the first
time or after the skates have been sitting in a hot car. The bolts
do need to be tightened after heat molding—just wait for the boot
to cool first.
Why do my feet ache the first couple times I wear my new
skates?
It is common for these type of skates to cause aching in the sole
or bottom of your feet for the first couple of days. This discomfort
should go away after only 2 or 3 ice sessions. If you have
persistent discomfort lasting more than this time period we
would recommend reheating the skates, which should resolve
the problem.
Are these skates more protective?
In short? Yes. The MLX skate is constructed mostly of a carbon
fiber composite, with an aramid fiber inter-layered for structural
reinforcement . The skate is designed in a way that the shell
should disperse the force of an impact away from your foot, rather
than your foot absorbing the impact. If there is an extreme
impact, the shell will crack like an egg shell when it has been hit,
therefore saving your foot from a potentially very serious injury.
When should I order new blades?
We have 14mm of blade showing on our current 2010 skates.
We recommend getting new blades when the steel is around
7mm or below.
What should I sharpen my skates at?
We recommend having the least amount of hollow possible.
Most professionals skate at 1/2 or 5/8 hollow. Our skates have
the ability to work with your natural body mechanics when turning
and therefore requiring less hollow to maintain stability and
maneuverability, causing less friction, hence more speed.
How should I lace my skates?
Most athletes like to lace the skates snug at the bottom and
looser the last two eyelets. Some skaters also like it looser at
the toe as well.
Do these skate feel “more forward” or “more neutral”?
The feedback we have received from top players is that these
skates just feel more balanced. They never feel too far forward or
too far back and it is easier to balance in an athletic position on
the skates. Players have reported feeling quicker and more
athletic.
How do I get the best fit after baking the skates?
When putting your MLX Skates on, because the skate will mold in
the ankle area better than any other skate, there is no need to
“bang” the heel of the skate down to lock the heel/ankle into
place. Doing so may result in premature breakdown of the
carbon fiber in the ankle area
